De Anza College
Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies

As one of the first examples of a sustainable "green" building in the California Community College system, the 22,000 sq. ft. Kirsch Center is a state-of-the-art educational centre combining interdisciplinary environmental studies, energy management technology, and community outreach. Electrical energy use is projected to be at least 88% lower than a comparable building which meets California's new Title 24 energy standards.

Berea Ecovillage

Berea Ecovillage
Berea College, Kentucky

Guided by intertwined educational, environmental, and social goals, the Ecovillage is a residential and learning complex designed to meet housing needs for student families, childcare for campus children, and provide a living/labor opportunity for students interested in sustainability and green design. The Ecovillage is first and foremost about education and is an example of "learning by doing". Residents and children learn valuable lessons in environmentally responsible living through everyday activities and shared experiences.

The project began with an on-site workshop with Center staff and UC Extension Agents to develop the goals, program and a plan for a modest, low-budget multi-use conference center and research labs. A good portion of the staff have been at the Center for decades and their deep knowledge of the place informed the design intent from the very beginning.

This project represents a trend that EDC increasingly seems to be attracting: individuals, companies and institutions that focus on transforming investment capital into ecological and cultural capital to generate economic, ecologic, and community benefits for the long term.
